Summer Architecture Instensive, Columbia University
One of the first projects we did at the Columbia program was a materials study using neoprene. The inspirtation came from Coney Island and a ride called the Buckaneer. The assigment was to choose an amusement ride at the park that would eventually be used to inform a compele redesign of the Coney Island as a new campus for the United Nations headquarters in New York. From the shape and movement of the Buckaneer the neoprene began to take shape, eventually leading the shape (at right) that would serve as the exterior shell of the new Secretariate Building on the proposed new UN campus.
